NewsDate: Mar 03, 2010 More Goaltenders Off To NCAA DI
Two more CSHL alums have joined, or will be joining the ranks of NCAA DI hockey. According to the Bowling Green Sentinel-Tribune: Scott Zacharias, who leads the Central (Ontario) Junior Hockey League in goals-against average and save percentage, has verbally committed to play at Bowling Green next season. Also, Garrett Bartus made the move over winter break to the University of Connecticut. According to a story on the St. Louis Bandits website: The St. Louis Bandits have been as successful as any junior hockey team in developing talent and preparing players for the next level. St. Louis Bandit Garrett Bartus is no exception. Bartus, a 6'2" 185lb goaltender from St. Charles, Illinois who began this season playing for St. Louis is now playing NCAA D-1 Hockey at the University of Connecticut. Bartus had a phenomenal first half of the season with the Bandits going 11-4-0 with two shutouts, including a 1.91 GAA and a .925 save percentage. The University of Connecticut took notice of Bartus' success, and not only offered Bartus a scholarship to become a Husky, but wanted Bartus to play for the Huskies this season. Bartus is excited about this opportunity, and is very thankful to the Bandits for preparing him for the next level. "It's awesome. My goal in junior hockey was to play collegiate hockey, and I'm very happy to get this opportunity. The Bandits were great about everything, and they worked really hard to get me here," said Bartus. Bartus also talked about the difficult decision to leave the three time defending NAHL champions. "I would have liked to stick around and win another championship for St. Louis, but this was an important opportunity for my playing career. Coach Brown and the guys have the team to win another Robertson Cup, and I wish them the best of luck and will be pulling for them," explained Bartus. Bartus is now focused on being a student athlete and helping his new team find success. "My goal is to make the most of this chance by getting a great education, and helping my team win," added Bartus. And judging by Bartus' character, he will have no problem accomplishing that goal. "I have had the opportunity to coach Garrett for 3 plus years so it is fantastic to see him reach the goal he set so long ago. He is a great goaltender and an even better person. The staff and organization wish him the best of luck," said Bandits Assistant Coach Rocky Russo. Click here to go back to news articles |
